Adjacent to the Potomac River, Prince William County is situated in Virginia on the east coast of the United States. With a diverse pool of residents and housing properties, the area also features some amazing parks, historical battlefields, and plenty of nightlife opportunities.

South of Loudoun and Fairfax Counties

Prince William County is situated in northern Virginia and is bounded on the north by Loudoun and Fairfax Counties; to the west is Fauquier County, to the south are Stafford County and MCB Quantico, and to the east is the Potomac River, with Charles County, Maryland lying across the river. Manassas is the county seat while the largest town in the county is Dumfries. Some notable destinations within Prince William include Potomac Mills, Fountainhead Regional Park, the National Museum of the Marine Corps, and the Manassas National Battlefield Park.

Named for Prince William, Duke of Cumberland

The county was named for Prince William, Duke of Cumberland—the third son of King George II. At the time of European encounter, the inhabitants of the area that would become Prince William County were the Doeg—an Algonquian-speaking sub-group of the Powhatan tribal confederation. The Doeg maintained several villages in the area until the 1650’s.

The First & Second Battles of Manassas took place in the area around 1861. Today, the National Battlefield Park provides the opportunity for visitors to explore the historic terrain where men fought and died more than a century ago. Some historic sites to see on the battlefield include the Robinson House, Brawner’s Farm, Battery Heights, and Stone House—a historic house used as a hospital during both battles. It is near the intersection of Sudley Road and Lee Highway.

The County is Traversed by Many Highways & Roads

Route 234—or Sudley Road—bisects the county and travels to towns like Manassas and Dale City. I-66 is an east-west road running across the county, while the more commonly used I-95 is the most congested interstate in the area. Driving northbound on I-95 is a quick hit to Loudoun County and finally Washington, DC. Route 1, 15, 29, and 123 are other important roads in the county. Manassas Regional Airport lies near its namesake city, while both Dulles Airport and Ronald Reagan National Airport are also located nearby. The county is also served by both VRE and Amtrak lines with some stations sitting in Quantico, Woodbridge, and Manassas.

A Wide Range of Property Types

Prince William County is home to a significant amount of commuters since the county is just 35 miles south of Washington, DC. Because of this aspect, the area surprisingly offers some of the most affordable housing in the region. A wide range of property types and friendly communities ensures that the county real estate market remains vibrant and desirable. Depending on where in the county you decide to reside, you can expect anything from gorgeous custom built estates and stately waterfront properties, to classic ranchers, townhomes, and condominiums.
